Supporting key adaptation initiatives

This component is enhancing resilience across these main areas:

Health– to reduce climate variability and climate change related risks from the mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue,Chikungunya and Zika Virus

Marine Resources-to reduce climate variability and climate change related risks on the fisheries industry;

Agriculture-to improve the availability of climate resilient varieties of plants and agricultural production systems;

Water-to develop an enabling environment for Rainwater Harvesting Systems via policy and capacity building;

and through Mainstreaming climate change considerations into development planning including the use of climate change risk and adaptation tools. 

Component 4 has five sub-components:

Health

Objective: To reduce climate related risks from mosquito-borne diseases including dengue and chikungunya

Activities include:

  • Establishing early warning systems for three PPCR Caribbean countries
  • Providing dengue-related GIS vulnerability maps for three PPCR Caribbean countries
  • Disseminating information on the relationship between CC & vector borne diseases  to Health Ministries, Planning Units, Schools and Community Disaster Groups in three PPCR Caribbean countries

Water

Objective: To improve the enabling environment for Rainwater Harvesting systems through policy and capacity building

Activities include:

  • Installing rainwater harvesting systems in three water-stressed communities
  • Producing and disseminating an updated handbook and technical fact sheets on rainwater harvesting
  • Training service providers to install Rainwater harvesting systems that incorporate water safety measures in four PPCR countries

Marine Resources/Fisheries

Objective: To reduce climate related risks to the fisheries sector

Activities include:

  • Developing an ICT-related Early Warning System to reduce climate related risks to fisherfolk
  • Conducting an assessment of the ecological and socio-economic impacts of climate change and climate variability on regional fisheries
  • Developing a regional fisheries and environmental database

    Mainstreaming Climate Change Considerations into Planning and Policy

    Objective: To integrate climate change considerations into planning and facilitate the use of climate change risk and adaptation tools for development planning and policy making

    Activities include:

    • Conducting policy and legislative review in targeted PPCR countries for the mainstreaming of climate change adaptation
    • Training/Sensitising policy makers in select PPCR countries in the use of climate risk assessment and management tools for planning

    Agriculture

    Objective: To improve the availability of climate resilient plant varieties and agricultural production systems in the region

    Activities include:

    • Developing climate change resilient agriculture production systems and livelihoods
    • Developing seed banks in select PPCR countries
    • Increasing the storage capacity for climate resilient plant varieties
